What to Do If You Were Sleeping in Your Contacts
You shouldn’t sleep in your contacts, but we know that most of you did it anyway (hopefully not on purpose). If you wake up with your contacts, take your time to take them out.
Immediately touching contacts with infected hands can increase the risk of infection, Greatist reports. When you sleep with contacts, your cornea swells just enough to create gaps between cells for bacteria (or even amoeba ) to enter.
The swelling will decrease once oxygen reaches the surface of your eyes. So instead of removing your lenses right away, rinse your eyes with drops and wait a few minutes before removing them, when your eyes are less vulnerable to infection.
How bad is it to sleep in my contacts, right? | Great
