Practice Mindfulness While Enjoying Chocolate
Here’s the most delicious way to practice mindfulness : immerse yourself in the process of eating chocolate.
Mindfulness is about being in the moment, so why not focus on chocolate food for your wellness? Kelly Edwards describes the process in World of Psychology. Here’s a glimpse:
Then notice the chocolate in your hand. Pay attention to the weight of the chocolate and its texture. Is it warm, cool, soft, tough? Pay attention to any urge you feel to swallow it, but gently return your attention to the feel of the chocolate in your hand. If they are closed, open your eyes and look at the piece of chocolate in your hand. Pay attention to its shape and color, as well as any of your answers.
Now smell the chocolate. Bring it slowly to your nose, noticing when the chocolate scent first penetrates your senses. When this happens, just sit for a while, enjoying the scent. It may be mixing with other scents that you may not have noticed before. It may have a stronger smell than you’d expect. The desire to devour it may be even stronger. Pay attention to these things and enjoy the feeling of comfortable sitting while inhaling the scent of chocolate.
In the end, you will, of course, eat the chocolate, but with full attention to every bite.
It doesn’t have to be chocolate. Any food can help you to practice – and in any case, we should eat more mindfully with each meal.
You don’t need a reason to eat chocolate, but now you have it.
