Create Your Own Affordable Freestanding Climbing Wall
Climbing gyms are good, but often expensive for what they offer. If you have space and want to climb at home, try building this free-standing climbing wall in your garage or backyard.
The exact costs will depend on where you decide to shop, but everything you need for this project is available at your local hardware store. On Instructables, user mga12 was able to build this wall for about $ 150. You will need at least eight feet high and wide (and four feet deep) to install a wall, so a large room, garage, or covered open space is best. Here’s everything you need.
- 2 sheets of plywood 3/4 “
- 1 strip of 1 by 8 feet plywood for the top
- 12 studs 2’x4’x104-5 / 8 “
- 1 box of 2 ” drywall screws
- 1 box of 1.25 ” drywall screws
- 1 box of 3-inch drywall screws
- 40 climbing holds with equipment (aim for 32 per plywood sheet)
- 100 additional T-nuts for additional configuration options (optional)
- 12 Plate connectors
- 4 x 90 degree slots (3 ” angle)
- 8 beams 2×4
You will also need a power drill with a Phillips head and a 7/16 “wood drill, a 3/8” hex wrench, tape measure, protractor, and saw. Be sure to carefully test the wall after construction is complete, as it will have to support your entire body weight (and the weight of anyone you let use it!).
