Long Server Room Power Strips Add Outlets Without Cluttering Cables

Long, multi-outlet power strips can usually be found in tricky locations like IT workstations and server rooms, but there is no reason you can’t buy and install them on the underside of your desk at home. I have one, they are relatively cheap and have a thin minimum profile that makes it easy to pull cables through.

For reference, I took this 12-outlet Tripp-Lite ($ 40) power strip a couple of years ago and installed it on a rail under my desk. I hooked it up to a backup battery for a little overvoltage protection (it’s not in the backup circuit, don’t worry) and use it to charge phones, portable consoles, and whatever else I need for a spare connector on or around mine. Desk. Best of all, it’s small enough not to get in the way, and isn’t a large plastic box with a thick, hard-to-turn cable sticking out of. Cool Tools details how surprisingly useful they can be:

Unlike their smaller plastic cousins, they look good when installed under a counter or at the base of an apron. Unlike the smaller strip, you can use generic warts (ur-wart?) In each outlet and not block anything. They are made of metal and will not crack if dropped on them. I got my first giant power strip ten or more years ago and it still works.

The best part is that their cables are long and flexible enough to be rolled or stretched and routed wherever they need to, and they can also be mounted under a table, kitchen counter, or in a garage. It’s a reliable and easy way to add power to just about anywhere, or create an instant charging station where you need outlets.
