The more you do something, the better you get, right? Not really. If you practice a skill but never do anything differently, you will not get better.
As the advice site Barking Up the Wrong Tree explains, practice is about more than just repeating the same thing over and over. In fact, if you do what you know how to do, instead of forcing yourself to do what you haven’t tried before, you just spin the wheels. You are not actually exercising:

Doing something over and over doesn’t necessarily make you better. If that were the case, we would all be great racers. Repetition is not an experience.
Instead of doing the same thing over and over again, try changing your pattern. Practice the skill differently than you are used to. Try what you don’t like. In fact, if you succeed in every attempt, you don’t get better. Sometimes you need to fail .
