PSA: There Is a Secret Button for Raising the Armrest at the Aisle of the Plane

The aisle seat armrest may not appear to rise, but the appearance can be deceiving. Many aisle seats have a hidden button or lever to raise the armrest.

This tip comes to us through Reddit user Goat_Porker, who says it might come in handy if you’re looking to push boundaries, although some flight attendants may advise you to lower it. Chad Upton of Broken Secrets also adds that this will also make it easier to get up:

Several years ago, I saw a man in the row in front of me who raised an armrest by the aisle. It was a game changer for me. No more dodging! Simply lift up the armrest, then stand up and slide off your seat into the aisle.

There are a few aircraft that do not have movable aisle armrests. However, most have a small lever or button on the underside of the armrest, next to the hinge. By pushing or sliding this lever, you release the hinge latch, allowing you to raise the armrest.

So maybe the next flight in tight quarters will be a little more comfortable for you.
