Find Out How Easily Distracted You Are With This One-Minute Quiz
Our era of noise and distractions. How well do you handle them? This mental exercise tests your ability to filter out distractions and focus on the task at hand.
This is a short, simple game from New York Magazine, based on classic tests used by psychologists:
The classic test scientists have used to study a person’s selective attention – in other words, the ability to turn off irrelevant information and focus directly on the task at hand – is the so-called Stroop color and word test, the effectiveness of which has been replicated in hundreds of scientific studies. Try it yourself with our version below, which itself is based on a game developed by Boston College psychologist Joshua Hartshoorn.
In the game, you have to click the left arrow if the word is white and the right arrow if it is orange, no matter what the word says. Those. ignore the fact that the word says “orange” or “white” and choose the correct arrow depending on the color of the text.
Your correct guesses and the time it takes you to answer are tracked, and then you will receive a summary of your results.
If you find yourself easily distracted, you can try meditation to improve your focus or to look on the bright side: people who are easily distracted are also generally more creative than those who are more focused.
