Instantly Free up Almost 1 GB on Your Raspberry Pi by Ditching LibreOffice and Wolfram
One of the really nice things about the newest Raspbian builds is that they have pretty much all the software you need to run. The downside to this is that all of this software takes up a lot of space. RasPi.tv points out that you can quickly get 1GB back by uninstalling two applications: LibreOffice and Wolfram.
Obviously, uninstalling apps frees up space, which doesn’t surprise anyone, but it’s easy to forget how important this is when you’re running an operating system that runs from a MicroSD card. In this case, every bit of space matters, and if you’re new to Linux or Raspberry Pi, you might not know exactly how to free up space.
LibreOffice takes about 250MB, while Wolfram takes about 650MB. This means that they are too big space pigs on the Pi. Obviously, if you are using these programs, do not uninstall them. But if you don’t, getting rid of them is very easy. Just run these commands to get rid of Wolfram:
sudo apt-get purge wolfram -otorsudo apt-get cleansudo apt-get autoremove
You can do the same for LibreOffice by replacing libreoffice*
with the wolfram-engine
above. Other space waste culprits can include minecraft-pi
and sonic-pi
. Of course, if you do not want any – any additional software, just use Raspbian Lite image from the beginning. The Lite image just includes everything you need to run Raspbian without any additional applications.
