The Skills You Need and the Salary You Can Count on As a Data Scientist

Data Science is a growing career area that pays well. If you are interested in programming, mathematics and / or statistics, this career might be ideal for you. However, you should consider three different roles in data science.

Springboard explains that data science teams tackle data problems such as building a statistical model to predict sales:

Data Scientists are the bridge between programming and implementation of data science, data science theory, and the value of data to business.

data engineers rely heavily on their software development expertise to handle large amounts of data at any scale. They are versatile generalists who use computer science to process large datasets. They usually focus on coding, cleaning up datasets, and fulfilling queries from data scientists.

Finally, there are data analysts who look at the data and provide reports and visualizations to explain what ideas the data is hiding.

All three are interesting careers that require some mathematical know-how, in particular an understanding of algorithms, in addition to software engineering and communication skills, depending on the position.

The graph below summarizes the data science careers area, but you can also head to Springboard for a free 70-page guide to these careers if you’d like to learn more.
