24 Film and TV Reboots That Really Deserve to Exist
We say we hate reboots. We will happily go on and on about how we’d much rather that – something newer, fresher, more original. And yet, remakes and rework are still big business.
In all fairness, this has been the case since the beginning, when film producers procured books and plays in search of ideas more often than pursued new ones. This is pure economics: films are expensive, and past success hints at future success. It’s easy to forget that 1939 The Wizard of Oz was the fourth adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s 1900 book; these concepts were in the air for nearly four decades before Judy Garland ever wore ruby silver shoes.
It may not be in the same league as this classic, but the CW just provided details on the upcoming reboot of the iconic mid-2000s series – 4400 , with the new version cleverly different from the original by omitting the article. (The network has had success in the past few years, rebooting shows from Charmed to Walker to Roswell to Kung Fu .) And then there’s the question of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune , whose second trailer just dropped , promising much more dramatic satisfaction. version of the novel that David Lynch was able to manage in the 80s. Why do we keep revisiting the worlds we have already explored? You can’t blame everything on Hollywood’s lack of imagination – that’s ours too.
