According to the Dean of Stanford University, the Skills Everyone Should Have by Age 18
High school is supposed to prepare you for real life, but sometimes it doesn’t. If you’re looking for the essentials to teach your kids (or study like an adult), here are suggestions from one of Stanford’s deans.
As former Stanford dean and writer Julie Lytcott-Haims suggests, by age 18, a person should already have some basic skills that will help them navigate life. Including, but not necessarily limited to:
- Be able to talk to strangers.
- Navigate the city, campuses, etc.
- Manage assignments, workloads and deadlines.
- Contribute to housekeeping.
- Solve interpersonal problems.
- Deal with the ups and downs.
- Be able to make and manage money.
- Know how to take risks.
Many of these skills are not taught in schools. In fact, some are actively discouraged. In which school do teens want to take risks? Some adults can go their entire lives without studying them. However, as you grow up and are forced to solve your own problems, these skills are invaluable. You can read more about these skills on Quora below.
