Control Arduino Powered Blinds With Alexa Voice Command

Earlier we talked about how cool automatic blinds are . And we know the Amazon Echo is pretty cool . This hack combines the two to use the Alexa voice command to open and close your blinds.

DIY hacker Yavin0427 demonstrates the perfect setup in the video above. This trick uses an Arduino and several servos to control three sets of blinds. The build is similar to the ones we’ve seen in the past, but you can view the full details of how he built the equipment here .

He used the SmartThings Arduino shield to connect to the Amazon Echo. This allows SmartThings devices to be connected to Alexa as a hub service . You will notice in the video that it had to say “turn the blinds on / off” rather than the more natural “open / close” due to the limitations of this platform. However, the slightly awkward wording is worth controlling your blinds with just the power of your voice.
