Gradually Every Day Before You Go for a Long Walk, Break in Your Boots
A good pair of hiking boots can last you almost forever, but you need to break them before heading out on any important excursion. You can make the break-in process easier by wearing them when running around on business or working around the house.
If you don’t put on your boots before going on a long hike, your feet will hate you. This is why Jeremy Anderberg of The Art of Manliness invites you to put on your boots a little every day to break them before you go out:
You don’t want your first joint venture with them on a 10-mile hike. Start by wearing them when doing housework, doing errands, walking around the neighborhood, etc. If your legs hurt for the first few days, take them off, let your feet rest, and put them back on the next day until they hurt again. In time, you will be able to wear them all day without pain and be ready to take them with you on your next adventure.
Anderberg explains that even after hacking them, there can be problems, especially on a very long trip. If so, pay attention to where those spots are while walking and add cushioning, lace up your boots differently, trim your toenails correctly, or wear bandages ahead of time.
