TextExpander Goes to Subscription Model, Here’s How to Move Your Snippets Elsewhere
TextExpander is one of the most popular text expansion programs out there, but it has always been a little expensive at $ 35. Now that price has gone up significantly with the new subscription model.
The new pricing model for TextExpander is now $ 47.52 per year or $ 4.95 per month. For that, you’ll get all the usual TextExpander features, plus their new sync engine, email support, and the ability to share groups of snippets with colleagues. There is also a beta version of the TextExpander application for Windows. Most of us expanding plain old text don’t really need all of these things, which is why we recommend a $ 5 aText for Mac instead .
Good news: if you are thinking of switching from TextExpander to aText, the import process is very simple:
- Open TextExpander.
- Select the group you want to export, then click the gear icon> Save a copy of the group … then save the file.
- Open the text.
- Click Data> Import Data and select the .textexpander file that you saved in step 2.
- Repeat this for each group.
That’s it, your TextExpander snippets should appear in aText. If you had any special settings for them, such as what applications they extend or sound effects, you will need to set them up again, but otherwise the snippets themselves will be there. You won’t get all the handy extras in TextExpander like team snippet sharing, statistics, or mobile sync, so in terms of value, this is a challenge you’ll have to make yourself.
