The Play Store Is Moving to Chrome OS by Bringing Tons of Android Apps

Google has made a lot of Chrome OS users happy today. The full suite of Android apps will be officially coming to Chrome OS soon, starting on a select few devices.

Chrome OS will hit the Play Store later this year, which means users will be able to buy and install Android apps just like they would on their phones and tablets. Notably, this is in contrast to downloading Android apps through the Chrome Web Store, which Google first began experimenting with in late 2014 .

Starting in “early June”, Android apps will only be available for select select devices, including the Asus Chromebook Flip, Chromebook Pixel (2015) and the Acer Chromebook R11. Experienced Chrome OS users will notice that all of these devices have touchscreens, which means Google may be waiting to roll out an entire store of touch apps for devices that can’t fully use them. For a later release, Google has a much larger list of Chrome OS devices that will support Android apps .

Until then, developers can optimize their apps to run on Chromebooks now. To the layman, this means that while you can install Android apps, some of them might not be perfect until the developers eventually get things to work right. However, we’ve been playing around with Android apps on Chrome OS for a while now , and for the most part they are pretty good as they are.
