Nick Offerman’s Tips for Newbies in Woodworking
If you’ve ever thought about taking up carpentry or any other type of woodworking, here’s a chance to learn a thing or two from Ron Swanson himself.
In this video from YouTube channel This Old House, actor and carpenter Nick Offerman shares some tips for aspiring carpenters. Here are some of his best tips:
- Find a mentor: If you know a family member or neighbor who has some woodworking skills, ask if they are willing to teach you.
- Start Small: Kill two birds with one stone, and learn while you solve minor problems at home. Fix the porch, build a doghouse, make your own birdhouses
- Buy a small lathe: Wood turning is fun and makes intricate designs easy. It doesn’t take long to learn the basics, and you can finish great work in a couple of hours.
- Start with a table, clamps, and a few chisels: learn to cut dovetail joints, as well as a groove and tenon . You will see how easy it is to shave wood, like butter or cheese.
Offerman notes that there is something elementary and rewarding about using your brain and hands to solve a problem or create something, and woodworking is perfect for that. Building things is a hobby that everyone can enjoy, no matter what you do for a living. If you are brave enough to pick up some tools and try them, attack you.
