Four Tips for Mastering Mandolin Slicing
Mandolins are effective tools for saving time in the kitchen , but they can be dangerous if you don’t use them correctly. These four tips will help you slice vegetables faster than ever and keep your fingers in the process.
In this video from the ChefSteps YouTube channel , Chef Grant Crilly demonstrates some of the mandolin mastery techniques to keep in mind when using your own:
- Keep your blade sharp: As with kitchen knives, a sharp blade gives you more control so you don’t accidentally cut yourself. Sharpen or replace it regularly.
- Stay steady: Place the mandolin on a flat surface so it doesn’t wobble while you cut. The less chance he has to budge, the better.
- Use guided slices for slicing: Slice vegetables or whatever you have into smaller, easier-to-handle slices before you start slicing them. For example, before you start slicing, cut the entire cucumber into three or four pieces.
- Use a guide: keep food against the side of the guide wall as you insert it into the slicer. This gives you more control and a consistent cut.
Mandolins can be intimidating, but if you follow these tips, you wonder why you didn’t use them all the time.
