Prevent Natural Fiber Rope From Chafing With Waxed Dental Floss

Natural fiber rope wears out quite easily and you can’t just melt the ends like nylon rope. If you want to stop abrasion, use waxed dental floss and a little knotting know-how.

In this video, ITS Tactical’s Brian Black demonstrates how to tie a regular “beat” knot or a special knot that prevents chafing at the end of the rope. The process involves collecting the frayed strands at the end of the rope, creating a bite (or large loop) that you spread along the length of the whisk you want to do, then wrapping the floss tightly around the strands and your large loop. and again, leaving a small loop peeking out at the end of the beat. After you’ve wrapped the thread around the rope, you pull the excess line through a small hoop and pull the line at the base of the flop to catch it and not loosen it. This may sound a little confusing, but the video demo makes it clear. When you’re done, the waxed floss will hold the worn end together so you don’t have to buy a new rope.
