This List Shows When Nexus Devices Will Stop Receiving Android Updates

Robust Android updates are a key selling point for Google’s Nexus line of phones. However, even nexuses have an expiration date. Google now has a published list of when you can stop waiting for updates for your Nexus phone or tablet.

The list can be found here on one of the Google support pages under “How long will your Nexus receive updates”. The Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P are currently the safest, with promised Android updates valid until at least September 2017. Most other Nexus devices have either expired or, in the case of the Nexus 6 and 9, expire in October. 2016 Nov.

Google specifically notes that there is no guarantee of renewal after these dates. It’s possible that Google can, at its discretion, extend the life of some devices, but you probably shouldn’t count on it. Also, these dates only apply to Android version updates. Nexus devices will continue to receive monthly security updates for “more than 3 years from availability or 18 months from the last sale of the device in the Google Store.”
