Nine Simple Tips for Improving Table Manners in Trendy Restaurants
Whether you’re dining at a fine restaurant, enjoying a wedding reception, or trying to look good at a work event, etiquette is essential. These tips are easy to remember and will help you look stylish.
In this video from the YouTube channel ZAGAT, Simon Kim, owner of the Piora restaurant in New York, shares some simple ways to maintain proper dining etiquette. Here are some of the key points:
- Don’t jump on the best seat: When your owner seats you, don’t climb onto a seat that looks more comfortable or has a better view. Let your invited guest or your date have a better place.
- First, place a napkin on your lap: as soon as you sit down, place a napkin on your lap. Think of it as if you lift the covers as soon as you go to bed.
- Don’t throw napkins on the table: If you need to get up, place the napkin on the seat, not on the table (unless you paid and are not ready to leave).
- Use the rule “b and d” to orient yourself : circle the index and thumb of each hand in a circle , and straighten the rest of the fingers. The “b” shape on your left hand tells you where your bread plate is, and the “d” shape on your right hand tells you which drink belongs to you.
- Use the right crockery for each dish: when in doubt, start with the crockery on the outside and work your way inside.
- Use the knife as a guide for food: If you need to move food around the plate or scoop food with a fork, use a knife.
- When finished, place the dishes on the plate: when you are finished eating, place the knife and fork completely on the plate, with the handles pointing to the right. This means that you have finished preparing the dish.
- Ask for the check carefully: take a quick glance at the waiter to get his attention. Do not wave your arms or shout.
- Place the check bearer away from you: After you place your credit card or cash in the check bearer, glue them to the edge of the table so the waiter knows they are ready to eat.
It won’t be the end of the world if you forget some of the more subtle tips listed here, but you’ll look good if you remember them. Plus, knowing the right dining etiquette will help you feel comfortable with the most unusual food, even if it’s not a regular cup of tea.
