Move the Box Spring Around Narrow Corners, Cutting and Folding It
One of the most frustrating things when moving into a new house or apartment is Tetris with furniture, which you have to play to cram all your big items into tight corners and stairs. Box springs can be particularly annoying, but their design is so simple that you can cut them in half partially.
In this video from This Old House, Tom Silva shows how you can cut a box spring in half and fold it like a book. But it takes a little more finesse than just sawing it in half: removing the bottom fabric, Tom makes two adjacent cuts on the long side of the outer wood frame. They then fold the box spring in half, carefully bending the metal wire that makes up most of the internal structure. As the box spring travels to its final destination, they unfold it to shape, unbend the metal wires, and gently twist the wood structure.
That’s a hefty amount of work, but you may have no other option if you want to get this box spring wherever it is. Better than cutting a mattress-shaped hole in the wall.
