When you first get a new graphics card, your games run very smoothly. Over time, you may start to notice that it doesn’t even work in the same games. What gives? This video explains what causes performance degradation over time.
As you might have guessed, your graphics card usually doesn’t degrade over time. Certain hardware components, such as hard drives or solid state drives, can become less efficient over time. On the other hand, graphics cards don’t degrade with use. Linus Tech Tips put this to the test by comparing the new EVGA GTX 480 sealed graphics card to the one the site has been using extensively for benchmarks and games. Both cards worked the same on the same machine.
So what makes your car slow down over time even in the same games? Any number of software problems can cause the same hardware to perform less efficiently. Upgrading to a new operating system with a lot of overhead, a build-up of malware or, oddly enough, a bloated set of anti-malware apps, or just installing too many unwanted apps that you forgot to clean up. The performance of other devices, such as the hard drives on which your games are installed, can also hinder your performance if you haven’t replaced them recently.
While your graphics card doesn’t degrade over time, that doesn’t mean it can’t wear out. As also indicated in the video, the more electrons you pump through the circuits of your graphics cards (especially if you force it through overclocking), the more likely you will see a glitch. However, this failure will be sudden, resulting in a complete card failure rather than simply degrading card performance over time.
