Why You Should Avoid Sarcasm During a Job Interview or Review
Job interviews and job reviews can be intimidating, and it’s tempting to break the ice with a little humor. However, if your sense of humor tends to be overly sarcastic, it may scare off your boss or potential employer.
This seems like self-evident advice, but sometimes we are sarcastic without even realizing it. Little jokes can be misunderstood, as business spokesman Michael Kerr told Business Insider:
“Now is not the time to use sarcasm, even if you think it will relieve tension. Using sarcasm will make you appear selfless again. Likewise, you can use a little self-deprecating humor to show that you can laugh at yourself, but don’t go too far … “
Even to get rid of the awkwardness, jokes don’t always work. As Kerr explains, this kind of sarcasm can make you look insecure, and your boss or potential employer may take it seriously. Again, this seems pretty obvious, but nonetheless, it’s something to look out for, especially if your sarcasm is often lost on others.
