Rest of the Day: Google Is Developing a Completely New Operating System
Google is developing a new operating system, codenamed Fuchsia. So far, no one knows what it is for, and unlike Android and Chrome OS, it is not Linux-based.
- It looks like it’s designed to work on multiple types of devices with scalability in mind , from simple IoT devices to phones and desktops. And it’s open source, so you can really take a look at the code on Github . Google has talked about merging Android and Chrome OS before, but it looks like something new and different. In this case, I think OS means “oh surprise!” [Android Police]
- In other news, Windows 7 and 8.1 will now receive monthly updates instead of individual fixes. The move should make life easier for loyal users of these older operating systems, but some people are likely to be unhappy that you can’t choose updates as they will be delivered in large chunks. Changes will begin in October. [Windows for IT Pros]
- Apple just released iOS 10 beta 6 to developers. With new releases coming out every week, they must be close to finishing work on the goldsmith, which is expected to be released sometime in September. [9to5Mac]
- It is also rumored that they will release a 10.5-inch iPad Pro next year. It looks like there are too many iPad options right now. Too many, Cook. [MacRumors]
- You can now play Minecraft with the Oculus Rift. Microsoft announced its intention to bring the game to VR last fall and released a free update if you want to fully immerse yourself in a world with ironic low resolution. [Xbox Wire]
