Define the “type” of the Meeting Ahead of Time to Make Sure It Is Productive
Whether you hold regular meetings or simply have to attend, you can make them more effective by specifying the type of meeting. You will get everyone on one page, your meeting will be more productive, and you will spend time talking about what is important.
In addition to keeping everyone on the same page, remembering the meeting type ensures that the conversation continues. There are three main types of meetings, and each is best suited:
- Decision Making : By the end of the meeting, you want the group to make a decision on a specific topic. For example, whether to hire a candidate, accept an offer, or establish a new process.
- Communication : The goal is for the organizer or participants to exchange new or key information with each other, such as project status updates, planned events for the next week, or what everyone is working on.
- Brainstorming : A work session to generate ideas or solutions, such as ways to approach a new topic or area of business, potential solutions to a complex problem, or new areas for doing business.
Include a purpose for the appointment and enter the meeting invitation or email to attendees ahead of time, then start the meeting by clearly defining the purpose. To learn more about how to make your meetings truly productive and rewarding for everyone involved, check out our complete guide here .
