Remove Fridge Odors Permanently With This Deep Cleaning Mode
The refrigerator can start to smell rather unpleasant after several years of use. If you want to rid your refrigerator and freezer of odors once and for all, this deep cleaning mode will help you.
As this video from the Consumer Reports YouTube channel demonstrates, the first thing you need to do is take everything out of the fridge and freezer. If your refrigerator smells really bad, you’ll need to find a place to store overnight groceries elsewhere. Or try using up all the food in the refrigerator before doing this. Once the food is out, remove all shelves and drawers and then wash them in hot soapy water. If they are really bad, a mixture of bleach and water can be used. Now mix one cup of baking soda with one gallon of water and rub it all over the inside of the fridge and freezer. After you’re done wiping everything down, unplug the refrigerator and leave the doors open overnight. The next day, everything should smell good and you can put food back in there .
However, if that doesn’t fix the problem, you may have to go further. Keep the refrigerator unplugged and open the panel at the back of the freezer to access the evaporator coils. You may need a screwdriver to do this and make sure you unplug any wires you find. Now spray the coils with warm, soapy water and place a paper towel underneath to collect the drains. After that, wipe the coils with a microfiber cloth and put everything back together after air-drying.
