After the Wedding, Check Your Credit Report for Questions

If you change your name after the wedding (or at any other time), be prepared for extra paperwork . And when banks, lenders, and other institutions make a name change, you may experience hiccups from time to time.

For example, one Credit.com reader found a credit report difficult to find. The reader asked:

I recently got married and my name was changed. My landlord noticed on my insurance certificate that my name has changed. When they updated my name on their file, they automatically requested my loan without my consent. Is it legal to request an update of [your] last name?

As the website explains: no, it is illegal for institutions to conduct thorough investigations without your permission. You give permission, for example, when you apply for a line of credit. Soft requests do not affect your credit, unlike complex ones. In this case, the reader might mistake a soft extract for a hard one, or the data provider might indeed have made a mistake.

Either way, when you change your name, it’s worth checking your credit report for these errors . If you see tension, make sure it’s soft – it should be in a completely different section, marked as such. If you’re sure it’s tricky, here is a sample letter from the FTC that you can use to dispute a mistake .
