Don’t Limit Yourself to One Mentor, Consider Different Points of View

Mentors are a valuable source of guidance to help you advance your career , but one is not enough. Don’t limit yourself to the point of view or experience of one person. Having multiple mentors, or at least people to talk to, relieves pressure and broadens your horizons.

In the video above (skip to 03:03) Marie Forleo explains the benefits of having more than one mentor:

  • This relieves the pressure on your relationship . You can ask several people for advice so as not to overwhelm the same person with constant questions.
  • This gives you different perspectives for drawing . You need different perspectives because people’s advice may differ depending on their careers and work experience. Having a couple of mentors allows you to gain a comprehensive understanding of your options.
  • He will give you all the answers you need . No matter how good a mentor someone is, they don’t always have the answers you’re looking for. Being able to ask someone else will help you get the answer, even if one mentor doesn’t have the information you’re looking for.

Finding the right mentor can take work, but networking and interacting with others in your field will make it easier for you. Keep in mind that you don’t always need to meet someone in person to be an effective mentor, which is especially helpful for those with busy schedules. They may not have time for coffee or lunch, but they do have time to answer questions by email or phone.

You can also find great mentors by looking at people you think are your peers. They often face the same problems that you face.
