How to Figure Out the New IOS 10 Lock Screen

The first thing you’ll notice when you download iOS 10 is the new quirky lock screen. It looks different, and you might be a little shocked to see that the familiar “Slide to Unlock” is gone. There are many other settings. Don’t worry, most of these changes are for the better.

Use Raise to wake up and stare at your screen

You no longer need to touch the phone for the screen to light up. Just grab your phone and the screen should turn on immediately. Apple calls it Raise to Wake. It works on iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, SE, 7 and 7 Plus.

“Press Home to Unlock” instead of “Slide to Unlock”

If you’ve been using iOS for a while, the Slide to Unlock button is one of the most common buttons in iOS. Now he is gone. Instead, press the Home button to use TouchID to scan your fingerprint and unlock your phone. If you want, you can still enter the password to unlock it. It’s a little weird and it takes a while to get used to.

You can unlock your phone without going to the home screen

There are many things, like accessing pictures, email, photos or whatever you might want to do on the lock screen, that require unlocking your phone. You can now touch (not press) the Home button and unlock your phone with TouchID without going to the home screen. You can determine if it is locked or unlocked by looking at the icon at the top of the screen.

Swipe left to open the camera

Swiping from the bottom of the screen to open the camera app in iOS 9 was helpful, but always a little awkward. Now just swipe left to bring up the camera.

Rich notifications show you more information and are easier to respond to

Apple has revisited its notifications again, and this time mostly forever. When you receive a notification on the lock screen, you can force-tap it to reveal more options. In the case of messaging apps, this means you can type a reply to a message right here, but it can potentially be used in all ways as long as the apps support it. For example, Apple’s original press conference showed how to turn off Uber right from the lock screen without even opening the app.

If you don’t have 3D Touch, you have to swipe left on the notification and then press the view button, which is similar to how it has worked in the past.

Customize your widgets to get the most out of the new lock screen

Finally, you can now access your widgets by swiping right. This works basically the same way as the widgets we’ve had in the Notification Center since iOS 8 , but they are much more accessible. A widget is a way for any application to display a small piece of data, such as current headlines, sports scores, weather, or a calendar. Most Apple apps support widgets by default, as do nearly all major third-party apps. To customize what is displayed here, go to the widgets page, scroll down to the bottom and click Edit. You can customize which widgets appear in what order.
