Average Cost of Various Types of Transport in Popular European Destinations
Traveling between most European countries is fairly easy and you usually have several transport options: plane, train, or bus. The GoEuro Transport Price Index shows the average price for each mode of transport for 40 European countries.
GoEuro is a transport booking site in Europe and in their recent index they analyzed the prices of the millions of tickets sold on their site over the past year. They summarized their findings in an interactive chart that compares the average price per 100 kilometers for each mode of transport, depending on the country.
As Travel + Leisure notes, there were three countries where it was cheaper to fly by plane than by train: Switzerland ($ 33 vs. $ 42), France ($ 17 vs. $ 20) and Spain ($ 13 vs. $ 15). In Portugal, the average cost of a flight per 100 kilometers was the same as the average cost of a train trip – nine dollars.
Bus prices are, of course, generally cheaper, but this is not always the case. In Finland, the average bus price was about $ 15 per 100 kilometers, compared to $ 9 per train. Here are a few more comparisons below, but be sure to check out the full GoEuro spreadsheet at the link below for a full list of countries.
