Das Keyboard Prime 13 Is a Sleek, Backlit Mechanical Keyboard Worth Trying
A good mechanical keyboard can be fun to work with or play, but finding one that works wherever you need it can be tricky. Das Keyboard’s newly released Prime 13 is a well thought out awesome tool that fits with many of the personal possibilities I’m looking for in a mechanic that can do double duty.
For the uninitiated, mechanical keyboards – or keyboards with full individual switches under each key – may not be for everyone, but the community around them is healthy and growing, mainly because they are just so much fun to use and introduce fans, a customization and personalization element for the instrument. that you are likely to use every day. Das Prime 13 may have just launched, but the company sent me to play with it a few weeks ago, and I’m using it to write this article in an open office with other people sitting around me – and even after I asked to make sure that they don’t bother you in the least.
The Prime 13 isn’t the quietest mechanic I’ve used ( Cooler Master Novatouch wins this prize), but its Cherry MX Brown switches mean it’s slightly softer than other keyboards I’ve used. It’s a full-sized keyboard (which I like too, although I know a lot of people prefer keyboardless models) with a USB port at the top that’s perfect for a wireless mouse receiver or other USB device. The 6.5-foot braided USB cable means you have enough room to plug it into the back of your computer or a laptop on the other side of your desk. It also comes with white LED lighting, perfect for long hours of work or, if you’re like me, just a little shape with your function. The aluminum top panel is reminiscent of the more expensive Das Keyboard 4 in a more affordable package. In terms of price, the Prime 13 costs $ 149 retail.
Of course, there are cheaper and more affordable mechanical devices. One of the reasons I like Prime 13 is because I have a short list of things I need in the mechanics I’m going to use to work: it should be full size with a numeric keypad, it should be backlit and it needs some kind of USB hub for that. I can give or take on things like dedicated or switchable media key functions, the kind of backlighting, or the number of USB ports, but I definitely need that a lot – and the Prime 13 reaches all of those points. It would be better if it was closer to the $ 100 mark, but I believe we will see more retailers pick this up and sell, we will see some price competition. Meanwhile, if you’re looking for mid-priced premium mechanics with solid build quality, the Prime 13 is worth a look.
