DIY Butcher Block and Pipe Workstation
Redditor ksmithbaylor built this gorgeous butcher block and workstation out of steel pipes and we love it. Sure, it’s spacious and clean, but hats off to the DIY spirit and for making it all work, work well, and look good. Here are a few more photos of the finished installation.
The photo above shows all three ksmithbaylor displays connected to the Macbook Pro installed in the back and above the others. As for the mechanism that this whole setup runs on, here’s what the Imgur gallery says (link below):
Technologies:
- Late 2013 15-inch MacBook Pro 2.6GHz i7 processor 16GB RAM Discrete Graphics
- 3x 27 ” AOC IPS monitors (don’t know which model)
- 87-key CODE keyboard (manufactured by WASD) with Cherry MX Green switches
- Apple Magic Trackpad 2
- Microphone Blue Yeti
- Logitech speakers with subwoofer
- Kingston 7 Port Powered USB Hub
- 2 x Seagate 1TB Portable Hard Drives
- Xtand Pro laptop stand
In the computer, one monitor runs through a mini-DP to HDMI adapter, one runs through a mini-DP to VGA adapter (one of my HDMI cables is broken), and one runs directly through the HDMI port. It can drive three monitors and an internal screen thanks to its discrete graphics card.
The microphone, keyboard, and two hard drives (not visible here) are connected to a powered USB 3.0 hub (also not visible in this figure) that plugs into the laptop’s USB port. It takes about 30 seconds to connect and disconnect the laptop.
Here is a side photo of the entire setup:
And a closer look at the wrap-around effect you get if you sit and work, which I suppose should be as exciting as everyone else:
The entire gallery below has tons of photos of the assembly process, and all the equipment, tools and items used by ksmithbaylor to assemble and build it all, including that gorgeous custom Global Industrial butcher block table surface. Click on the link below to check it out (and find out where to get that tabletop), and while you’re at it, head over to Reddit and vote for it all – if you’re interested in any particular component, you’ll find it in the source thread, or in the gallery description below.
If you have your own workspace to show off, share it with us by adding it to our Lifehacker Workspace Show and Tell Flickr pool . Make sure all photos you add are at least 1280×720 in size. Maintaining their 16: 9 aspect ratio also helps! Include a little text about what you used, how you came up with the design, and any other important details. If your smart organization and good design flair are striking, you could be the next workplace ambassador!
