A Question to Ask Before Giving Advice to Someone
When someone asks you for advice, it can be difficult to tell if they really want your help or just want someone to speak up . Before offering your words of wisdom, ask them this question first.
As Ramit Sethi of I Will Teach You To Be Rich explains, people looking for advice often look for something completely different. Maybe they want to complain without admitting they are complaining. Or maybe they just want you to tell them that they are doing well and that they are okay. The only way to know for sure is to ask them first, “Out of curiosity, how serious are you?”
Their answer will tell you whether they want consolation or relevant, detailed advice . Sethi suggests that if their answer is anything less than something like “I’ll try whatever you say,” just smile at them, offer some support, and tell them they’ll figure it out.
