What These Netflix Stars Really Mean

Whether you “scare” or not, there are many factors to consider when choosing your next drink on Netflix, and ratings are one of them. I’ve always assumed these little stars represent the average rating of other Netflix users, but it turns out to be a little more complicated.

There are many ways to customize your Netflix viewing experience , but ratings are what’s already set up for you. According to BGR, the number of stars you see depends on the feedback from like-minded people:

For example, when you look at the intro of a movie, the respective rating is not a moving average of how all Netflix users rated the movie. Rather, the rating reflects that users who have similar entertainment tastes as you thought of the movie. As a result, it is quite possible for the same movie to display two different ratings for two different accounts.

This is great news as it means that my choices are influenced by people who love absurd humor and have seen The Last Waltz at least ten times, and these are the opinions that really excite me.
