It is important to check your credit report regularly and if you find a mistake, you will want to challenge it. This is a smart move, but first of all, just ask for confirmation.

According to Credit.com, many consumers jump straight to a dispute when they can fix a mistake with a simple check:

Too many people start challenging positions too early in the process when they should also consider vetting, according to Randy Padever, consumer education specialist at Lexington Law, partner of Credit.com.

“Both Equifax and TransUnion allow consumers to request general product verification without going through a formal dispute resolution process,” Padawer said. Verifying an item requires the lender or credit bureau to ensure that the account information on your credit report is true, accurate, and fully substantiated. “Most of the cases we handle for clients start with requests to verify goods,” said Padawer.
