PSA: Amazon Will Invoice Prime Renewals to Any Card in Your Account

When you sign up for a service like Amazon Prime, your account is usually automatically renewed when your membership expires. If one card in your account expires, Amazon will use the backup.

We’ve already told you that you shouldn’t expect to unsubscribe if your credit card expires . In any case, most credit card issuers will automatically update your new information with their account providers. In other words, they will find a way to charge you.

For example, as Consumerist points out, Amazon will simply use whatever fallback payment methods you have on file. One customer discovered this the hard way when Amazon used their debit card to renew their Prime subscription. The transaction destroyed her account and incurred bank charges. (However, Amazon provided the buyer with a refund and credit.)

For this reason, you can simply save one card to an Amazon file so you don’t get caught off guard. Of course, Amazon will still charge you for whatever payment method you have, so it’s even better to track your membership subscription and cancel if you don’t want to renew.
