Avoid These 10 Photoshop Mistakes to Make Your Images Look Better

There are a lot of really cool things about Photoshop . However, just because you can doesn’t mean you should. This video demonstrates ten common tricks, but it probably shouldn’t.

This video, taken from the tutorial channel tutvid, shows several techniques, such as using too much bevel and embossing on text, or using a selective color technique to highlight one color in a black and white image. While these techniques are common (and relatively simple), they often draw attention to themselves rather than enhance the image itself.

In most cases, video provides an alternative to most of these techniques. For example, let’s say you want to use the Healing Brush tool to fix a spot. The tutorial does not recommend “destructive healing” when you degrade the original image. Instead, the Healing Brush has a “Current and Below” layer selection setting. This allows you to place the patch on a separate layer without damaging the original. Then, if you need to go back and undo the change later, you can simply hide that layer.

Some of the tips in this video boil down to preference. You might think that a completely black and white image, with the exception of red, is the most artistic thing in the world, but it may not feel that way. The manual likens this to the cliché of a man walking down the train tracks with a guitar on his back. This may not be the case , but it’s worth knowing the context in which your image will be displayed. If you do something for yourself, then do what you like. If you’re a professional Photoshop client, it’s helpful to know what to avoid.
