Here’s What Happens When You Fall Through the Ice and How to Be Saved

Falling through the ice on a frozen lake can be terrifying, but if you stay calm, you can save your life. This video demonstrates what happens to your body when you fall into icy water and how to get out onto the ice again.

This video is courtesy of the Pike Guides Service and was filmed with the help of emergency services, so definitely don’t try it yourself . We showed you how to survive a fall through ice , but this video provides a great visual demonstration. As the instructor shows, when you first fall into the water, your body will be in shock for 1-3 minutes. You will hyperventilate, but you will resist the impulse and try to keep your head above the water.

Once you’re comfortable, try returning to the part of the ice that you walked on. Although you fell through a weak spot in the ice, the place you came from was strong enough to support you once, so this will be your best chance to get out.

When you find a solid block of ice, pull yourself up while staying as horizontal as possible. Kick to get out of the water. Once you are completely on the ice, roll back. Don’t get up right away. As you get closer to the hole, you want your weight to be distributed. If you have ice axes, you can also use them to break away from the hole. When leaving the house, take off your wet clothes as soon as possible and put on something warm.
