Key Differences Between Whey and Casein Protein Supplements
Whey protein and casein are complete proteins that are beneficial for those looking to gain weight. But they differ a lot when it comes to digestion speed, muscle growth, and utilization.
As explained in this video from the PictureFit YouTube channel , whey protein is a faster-acting protein. It reaches the bloodstream faster and raises blood amino acid levels much higher than casein. It also contains more leucine , which helps build muscle. Casein is released into the bloodstream more slowly and releases less protein over time. But that also means it stays in the bloodstream for much longer – about eight hours compared to three serum. Plus, it preserves muscle mass better than whey.
Regardless of which protein supplement you choose, the most important thing is your total protein intake . So neither is better than the other as long as you meet your protein goals. However, whey is better for protein synthesis and growth, it is usually easier to consume, tastier and cheaper. But casein is better at preventing muscle protein breakdown, so a combination of both is ideal. Take a whey protein supplement after training and consume casein before bed.
