What’s New at Disney + September 2021
For a certain segment of Star Wars fans – a part of which I’m not a part, although I’ve been stuffing myself with information about the franchise since about 1985, there is nothing more important than arguing about what is part of canon . That is, which of the stories told in this universe over the past 40+ years actually “counts”. The argument got extremely hot when Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012 and announced that almost everything before the sale was no longer canon, with the exception of movies released in theaters. Some fans who have followed the galaxy far, far away through comics, books, and video games for decades were not happy; others have embraced new stories told in recent films and novels; some just liked to argue . In short, Star Wars fans are rarely happy, so I think more of them should stick to my approach to canon: if I like it, it’s part of canon. If I don’t, it’s not. This useful system means I don’t have to worry about The Rise of Skywalker sucking (although it does) because it’s not part of canon. And judging from that heading, Star Wars: Visions, the officially non-canon anime short series inspired by the sci-fi saga, which will premiere on September 22 on Disney Plus, is definitely canon. Because it looks amazing .
In many ways, Star Wars is a story made for anime. The training, setbacks, and ultimate triumphs faced by Jedi such as Luke Skywalker and Rey, uh, Skywalker are hero journeys that would be appropriate in any shonen manga . (In fact, Star Wars has even been adapted to Japanese comics before — in fact, several times .) And Lucasfilm seems to have done Visions right. When the Wachowskis put together Animatrix – a collection of anime short films that reflected the debt the Matrix film series inherited from manga and anime – rather than imitating the style of Japanese animation studios, Disney / Lucasfilm went straight to the source, enlisting the support of skills Some of the greatest anime talents are super- saiyan telling stylish stand-alone stories in the Star Wars universe. The trailer promises they won’t be any different from anything we’ve seen before, which – at a time when the franchise seems to be eating its own tail – I love it.
Among other ambitious news of remakes this month also will premiere Arc Kamealohi, MD, Disney Plus (8 September), reboot sitcom 90 with Neil Patrick Harris, a child who becomes a doctor who moves the scene to Hawaii and throws role … the girl – Peyton Elizabeth Lee of Andy Mac – is a precocious doctor. Here’s everything else to hit the streamer in September, including the new series of Marvel’s What If …? and the long-awaited appearance of even more directory favorites ( Pepper Ann kids, I’m talking to you).
