Financial Aid and Scholarships Do Not Always Cover the Cost of the Course

College is quite expensive, including tuition fees, but there are some less obvious costs that add up, such as course fees. Financial aid and scholarships do not always cover these fees.
As reported by the New York Times, financial aid covers mandatory fees but does not always include fees for certain courses. They write:
Scholarships may also only cover tuition, leaving recipients who don’t read the fine print with an amazing balance … Since 1999, compulsory fees have grown 30 percent more than tuition fees, said Robert Kelchen, an assistant professor at Seton Hall University, who studied the question. The average tuition fee for four-year public colleges was nearly $ 1,700 in 2015-2016. This is almost 20 percent of the average tuition and fees.
This raises the bigger issue of accessibility, and many students and organizations are petitioning against what some call “backdoor learning.” At the very least, this is a good reminder to prepare in advance and look into school fees.
