Types of Memory Problems to Worry About
Everyone forgets about things: we forget where we put the keys, we forget the names of people and we forget to take milk from the store. But some types of memory loss are a sign that something is wrong. Here’s what you need to pay attention to.
Forgetting little things is a completely normal type of memory loss, according to Dr. Thomas Wisniewski , director of the Center for Cognitive Neurology at Langone Medical Center at New York University . It’s okay to point a spacebar at someone or forget that you put your keys right at the door. But as Dr. Wisniewski explained to The New York Times , there are more serious issues you should be aware of:
… it’s one thing to forget where you left your car keys, but it could be more serious if you don’t know what the keys are for and how to use them. Getting lost in familiar places can also be a warning sign …
And Ann Norwich, director of the Nursing Nursing Adult Practitioner Program at York College, says alternate naming of objects is another sign of something serious – like a message that mail is in the oven when it’s actually on the counter. Norwich also says that being irritable or explosive when asked about your memory, or being suspicious of friends and family, can be early signs of dementia. Pay attention to all of these memory problems in yourself and in the people you are close to. You can find out more about the signs of memory loss at the link below.
