The Problem With Being Too Friendly
Jerks can really ruin your day, or worse, turn you into one of them. The world could be a little kinder, but being too friendly has its drawbacks too.
If you’ve ever been told that you are “too cute,” you can probably get so into this School of Life video that it hurts. Overly pleasant people don’t like confrontation, but what’s more, we just want to be liked . And when you form your point of view just to please, consent becomes a bad habit.
This not only prevents you from being yourself and truly exploring other points of view, but it also backfires. The School of Life puts it this way:
“In order to succeed in pleasing someone we must accept the risk that we might well anger them through the frank expression of our beings. Successful charm is based on the initial confident feeling that we can survive social failure … we must accept the risk of not making friends in order to have any chance of actually making them. ”
It’s not a permission to go out and be a nasty jerk just for the sake of being a nasty jerk. It just goes to show that part of the sympathy is confidence enough to share your point of view. To find out more, watch the full video above.
