Three Ways to Make Sure You Pick a Good Tailor
It seems that the number one advice on how to dress is always the same: choose custom-made clothes . It’s a great idea, but you really have to have a tailor for that, and finding the right one is paramount. Luckily, clothing expert Alison Freer has some great advice on how to do this.
In the link below, Freer has a lot of fantastic advice (including definitions of general adaptation terms), but here are three that I find most helpful:
- Pick Someone Nice: If you’re going to pay someone to physically alter your clothes, they should be someone you feel comfortable with, and not make fun of them. As Freer points out, you “want to forge a long-term relationship with someone who cares deeply about your best interests,” so just say no to the rude tailor.
- Find the one who makes the appointment – you don’t want to rush into decisions, and the appointment guarantees your undivided attention from your tailor. It also increases the chances of you actually showing up.
- Do a trial run with something less precious: Before Freer gives away any very delicate or valuable items, she makes a simple tweak, such as a hem, to check the work and make sure “everything is lined up, the ends of the threads are tied, and the seams are straight. … … “
Also, make sure you find a tailor whose sense of style is similar to yours. Of course, technical skills are important, but understanding trends and style goes a long way in helping you look your best.
