This Image Shows What Breast Cancer Might Look Like.
You’ve probably heard that you should see your doctor if you notice any changes in your breasts, as lumps and other abnormalities can be signs of breast cancer. But do you know what changes you are looking for? Let these lemons explain.
The onset of breast cancer can feel or look like a lump, but it can also include dimples in the skin, fluid leakage, or a dent in the breast. While breasts come in all shapes and sizes and may have some of these characteristics as part of their normal appearance (for example, some people have inverted nipples), if things change over time, it might be a good idea to check it out.
You may remember being told to self-examine from time to time to feel for lumps, but research shows that teaching women to self-test does not change how many people end up dying of breast cancer. The American Cancer Society, among other things, does not recommend self-examination as a mandatory element . But they still say that you should know how your breasts usually look and feel, and see your doctor if you accidentally notice any changes.
The lemon image belongs to a small non-profit organization Worldwide Breast Cancer , whose founder Corinne Beaumont was looking for a way to show breast cancer symptoms without relying on vague line drawings. Text descriptions can get the message across, but they don’t translate well in places where not everyone can read or where language barriers can be a problem. Beaumont earned her Ph.D. in graphic design through her research showing that this and the images associated with it help women understand what breast cancer symptoms actually look like.
