Set up Your Summer Daiquiri for Drinking in Winter
Sour lime daiquiri is commonly referred to as the “summer drink,” which is unfortunate given the abundance of citrus fruits we reward every winter. Luckily, drink gurus like PUNCH have come up with a few tricks to create a classic cold-weather cocktail.
First, let’s start with rum. Instead of gravitating towards something fancy and light, try a darker option like Appleton Estate’s Signature Blend or Hamilton Black . Perforation actually has tons of delicious dark rum offerings, so be sure to click on the link below to read on all of them. Once you’ve chosen your spirit, try one (or more) of the following supplements to really get your drink ready for winter:
- Substitute a sweetener: Brown sugar syrups can add depth and richness, and honey can “accentuate the treacle note found in many aged rums.” If you want to go crazy, you can play with flavored syrups like cinnamon and vanilla. Just remember to use them sparingly as they have a higher level of “perceived sweetness”.
- Use warm garnishes: cloves in a strip of orange peel, a burnt cinnamon stick, and freshly grated nutmeg are all good options.
- Spice it up with something spicy: a sugared rim “garnished with finely ground, dehydrated citrus peels or spices” can have a powerful aroma effect, even if you only apply it to half of the rim.
If this concoction isn’t wintery enough for you, I suggest you try toddy or maybe hot buttered rum. There is nothing more wintry than hot buttered rum.
