Why You Should Add Tahini to Your Blondies (and Other Sweets)

Tahini is a sesame paste that’s most commonly used in hummus, baba ganoush, and salad dressings, but it can add moisture and nutty qualities to a range of sweets.

I treat tahini in sweets as I treat miso in savory dishes ; it simply adds depth and dimension to everything it touches. It not only enhances the caramel notes and balances the sugary sweetness, but it also adds the roasted, roasted flavor that sings in baked goods. Real Simple loves to put this kind of stuff into their blondes , but you can use tahini to spice up any of the following:

  • Caramel Sauce: This is a pretty obvious option. You can follow the Bon Appetit Salted Sesame Caramel recipe, or try adding 1/4 cup to your favorite sticky sweet sauce.
  • Chocolate Chip Cookies : The New York Times adds half a cup of sesame paste to chocolate chip cookies for the ultimate sweet and savory treat.
  • Ice Cream: Butterlust not only makes his ice cream with tahini, vanilla and a touch of bourbon, but takes it a step further by sprinkling it with decadent honey caramel.

This should get you started, but it’s hard for me to think about things that tahini is n’t good for. Are the chocolate-covered tahini cups too far away? I do not think so.
