Vegetable Burgers to Buy and Avoid
Veggie burgers have come a long way since the 80s and some of them are actually quite tasty. There are, however, a ton of store bought options out there, there is even one that is oozing reddish liquid and choosing can be difficult. Fortunately, the daredevils at Epicurious tried a whole bunch of flavors, so we didn’t have to.
When it comes to veggie cutlets, there are two main types: those that try to mimic meat, and those that just accept what they are. Epi staff tried a few of them, and there were clear winners and losers:
- Best Veggie Burger : Dr. Preger’s California Veggie Burgers, which had “slightly curry, carrot flavor and recognizable vegetables,” and was “slightly sweet, with plenty of seasoning, and a pleasant texture.”
- Best Imposter Burger: Whole Foods 365 Meatless Burgers. Although it had a texture that “resembled pre-cooked frozen sausage,” it was still the best artificial meat of the group, with a “slightly spicy but not overly smoky flavor.”
- Worst veggie burger ever: Original Sunshine Quarter Pound organic burgers with a “rotten green” flavor and a “pure gruel” texture. Do not want.
- Worst Impostor Burger ever: Monster Meat Burger . One taster compared his experience with this hamburger to “eating tobacco.” Others described the patty as a “Cliff Bar” with a “bad taste of fake smoke.”
What about the famous bleeding burger? This caused the most controversy. While some thought Beyond Burger tasted “very appealing – almost like aged meat,” others said it reminded them of cat food, so you might have to try it yourself. (Also, not overly pedantic, the red liquid you see when you cut a piece of meat is not blood, but a mixture of water and myoglobin, “an iron and oxygen binding protein found in vertebrate muscle tissue. all mammals ”, but“ myoglobin burger ”is not like it.)
