Focus on the Future by Introducing Yourself to New People
When someone asks what you are doing, it’s easy to focus your answer on what you’ve been working on recently or what you’ve done in the past, but focusing on the future makes your elevator presentation more engaging. This is what we mean.
By focusing on your future goals, you give the people who are listening to you something to cling to, as they can offer advice, connections, or even just encouragement. You also give them a hook to use the next time you see them. They may ask how you are progressing in realizing your aspirations, and are more likely to remember what you discussed with them the last time. If you want to encourage conversation, add a question at the end, such as “What are you working on?” or “What are your plans for the year?” If the other person has experience in the area you want to work in, ask them for advice or resource recommendations.
