Three Seemingly Vegan Foods That Can’t Be
Eating a vegan diet seems straightforward: avoid eating animals and animal products such as dairy, eggs, and honey. But there are a few seemingly vegan foods that contain animal by-products that you may not have even heard of.
The link below has an in-depth America’s Test Kitchen guide, but here are three of the most amazing, possibly non-vegan items that might be hiding in your pantry:
- Sugar: The most common white sugar is processed through animal charcoal during bleaching. Some companies use granular charcoal, but you can’t tell by looking at the packaging. However, all is not lost. According to ATK, organic sugar is never processed with bone charcoal.
- Dried Pasta: Many pasta contain eggs, but a quick reading of the label will help you figure it out. Luckily, some of ATK’s favorite boxes of noodles are vegan, including this delicious spaghetti .
- Wine: Like sugar, veganism here is not about itself, but about how it is processed. Many wine clarifiers, such as casein, albumin, gelatin, and isinglas (fish bladder), are not vegan and can end up in the bottle. If you are unsure if a wine is vegan or not, check the bottle or ask your store clerk.
Of course, this is your diet and you can be as strict as you want, but it’s nice to know what exactly is included in your food so that you can make your own fully informed decisions.
